Girl Scouts of Northeast Georgia

Volunteering

Volunteering with any organization is probably one of the more rewarding activities in life.

Volunteering with the Girl Scouts of Northeast Georgia promises to be an experience you'll never forget. Just seeing the excited expressions on girls' faces...hearing them laugh...enjoying quality time with the women of tomorrow...is an experience not to be missed.

The opportunities are endless. You can work directly with the girls as a troop leader, or you can work behind the scenes to facilitate learning, plan camps, train other adults, or any number of other positions.

Best of all, you don't have to know anything about Girl Scouts to be a volunteer! Your unique skills and talents can be utilized to best serve our girls, and best involve you - at the level you want to be involved.

If all this sounds like something you want to be a part of, simply fill out a Volunteer Application, fax or mail it to either the Athens or Gainesville office and we'll get you started! You'll receive all the training you need so you'll feel comfortable in the position you fill.

Volunteer Positions
These are just a few of the many ways you can become involved directly or indirectly in a girl's life. The time and energy you put into their development and personal growth will reap benefits far beyond the days, weeks, months or years you put into them.

Whether you have a few hours a week or a few hours every other month, there's always something you can do. Be a part of shaping your own future through a girl's life! Volunteer today!

Troop Leaders
Volunteers in this position help girls put into practice the fundamental principles of Girl Scouts through a wide range of activities developed around the interests and needs of girls. Leaders meet with girls in a troop setting on a regular basis as well as in extracurricular activities outside of the troop meeting. This position gives volunteers the satisfaction of watching a girl as she matures into a competent young woman.
Troop Committee Members
Once a troop is formed, a Troop Committee of volunteers is created from among the parents of girls who are members of that troop. The Troop Committee acts as a support system for the troop leader and co-leader and handles some of the additional tasks necessary for a troop to function effectively and efficiently. Some committee positions include Troop Friends Chair, Troop QSP Chair, Troop Cookie Chair, Troop Outdoor Chair and Troop Emergency Contact.
Service Unit Team Member
Girl Scout leaders and co-leaders of troops in each county are part of a Service Unit Team, which serves the troops by providing guidance, support, council information, training and a link to council staff members. Volunteer positions for the ServiceUnit Team include the following:
(1) Friends Annual Giving Campaign-Family Partnership Division Chair
The Friends Annual Giving Campaign is a fund-raising program where parents or guardians of girl members are asked to contribute a financial gift to support and further the work of the Girl Scouts of Northeast Georgia. Volunteers in this position are responsible for the training and support of troop Friends Chairs and act as the council link for the family partnership division of the Friends Annual Giving Campaign. They work cooperatively with other volunteers to ensure a successful fund-raising campaign.
(2) Service Unit Communications Representative
Volunteers in this position maintain relationships with the local media including newspapers, radio and television in a particular geographic area. They submit articles/copy and photographs of area events and troop activities in order to promote Girl Scouting to the general public. Articles from the council are distributed from the council communications specialist for local release, adding a local slant when appropriate.
(3) Service Unit Director
Volunteers in this position work in cooperation with and as a liaison of the council to extend, manage and maintain Girl Scout membership, program, and fundraising in a designated geographic area known as a Service Unit. Council membership specialists work in partnership with these local administrative volunteers to provide service and information to volunteer troop leaders and ultimately ensure a quality Girl Scout program for local girls.
(4) Service Unit Membership Registrar
A volunteer in this position helps to facilitate the membership registration process and ensures membership registration forms are completed correctly and accurately and forwarded to the council registrar in a timely manner. This position is for the person who is detail oriented and enjoys doing paperwork.
(5) Service Unit Cookie Chair
A volunteer in this position directs, organizes and coordinates the Girl Scout Cookie Sale within the service unit (geographic area) in a manner consistent with recognized standards and policies. This position trains troop chairs to ensure that fund-raising goals and deadlines are met and that girls in the service unit receive the maximum benefits of the Girl Scout Cookie Program.
Gold Reserve
Former Girl Scouts make up the Gold Reserve. In the Athens area, the women hold regular meetings, put out a newsletter for the group, and do volunteer work, usually at the council office. Members do everything from answering the office phone and judging contests to stuffing and labeling envelopes.
Other Volunteer Positions
The council is always looking for the "occasional" volunteer who is an expert in an area often needed. Are you a lawyer who can provide advice on a "sticky" problem? A nurse who could be the camp nurse one week in the summer? An equestrian who could help Girl Scouts earn their equestrian badge? A computer "guru" who could install a new computer or explain why an old one doesn't work right any more? A handyman who would be available to repair tents, rebuild a boat dock or cut firewood? If you have a professional skill or talent and would like to share it with the Girl Scouts, we want to hear from you! Here are a few episodic or occasional volunteer opportunities:
